Winter is Back
Nov 17, 2014 By Strongrich & Associates, Inc.It seems like it was just yesterday that we were dealing with slick roads, ice dams and freezing pipes. Now that the first snowfall of the 2014-2015 season has hit, residents should be preparing themselves for another bleak winter. Although Meteorologists are not predicting such a persistent winter, the temperatures are still going to drop below average and the dreaded Polar Vortex will be sneaking down, hitting North America from time to time. The Farmer’s Almanac too states that this winter will be a cold one; late December through late January being the worst.
There are many things home owners and business owners can do to prevent having an insurance claim due to these circumstances. First, safely keep snow and ice off your roof. Having a buildup can cause leaks inside your home or business. This also helps to prevent collapse from the weight of snow and ice. Second, make sure your pipes are properly insulated. Depending on your insulation, pipes can freeze at any temperature under 32 degrees. Attics, crawlspaces and exterior wall piping are all places to check for proper insulation. Finally, keeping your home or business at least 55 degrees in the winter will help prevent damage. Being prepared is the best thing you can do to protect your home and business in any winter condition.
