Are Sinkholes Becoming More Common?
Jun 23, 2014 By Strongrich & Associates, Inc.
It seems as though every time you turn on the television there is a new sinkhole in a new county causing destruction. Just recently a sinkhole formed in Downtown Detroit that could swallow numerous vehicles, not to mention the recent sinkhole in Florida engulfing two homes. But why recently have sinkholes become so much more common?
In a nutshell, sinkholes happen when water washes away underground soil or rock. Typically they happen when a region has had a lot of rainfall or in some cases, when there is an underground leak that has gone unnoticed.
Recently, sinkholes have had a lot of publicity. Some experts say that they have not become more frequent, it is just that they are drawing more attention than ever before. Others say that human activity is helping push the devastation. Drainage problems and the decreasing water tables as well as the increased weight over the void are also said to be a cause.
Whatever the reason behind them, sinkholes seem to be affecting countries on the other side of the world as well in our backyard.
